Lucille Kroger Berne was the third child of Barney H Kroger. The book gives some interesting insight into the life and legacy of the Kroger family and some interesting tidbits about the history of the Kroger enterprise. A wonderful book for anyone who may be interested.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1033289293807518844.post-25649922116235287322008-12-28T15:57:00.000-06:002008-12-28T15:57:00.000-06:00Ghost of Steinberg's - Without question, Kroger is...Ghost of Steinberg's - Without question, Kroger is one of the most important chapters in American supermarket history. They are offf of LaVista Rd, where there is a large Orthodox Jewish community near them as well.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07788722183424550052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1033289293807518844.post-87320602990698473822008-11-29T13:32:00.000-06:002008-11-29T13:32:00.000-06:00Kroger does have the Buford Hwy/Clairmont Road loc...Kroger does have the Buford Hwy/Clairmont Road location in Atlanta that does well with the high Asian and Hispanic population in the corridor, better so than the now defunct Northeast Plaza Publix. Then in Arizona there is the Fry's Mercado, though Im not familiar with the particulars.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1033289293807518844.post-3830745230027098392008-11-18T21:17:00.000-06:002008-11-18T21:17:00.000-06:00Ken - Kroger seemed to prefer a slower, more metho...Ken - Kroger seemed to prefer a slower, more methodical approach in some respects and did not adopt self-service and the larger store footprints as quickly as some other chains did.

As far as catering to ethnic tastes, I guess it must depend on the particular store. Our local Kroger has a pretty wide selction of international foods compared to other stores in the area. My family works with a number of international college students (mostly from Asian and European countries) and we've had good luck finding some of their favorite foods there.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07788722183424550052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1033289293807518844.post-49054227916508246892008-11-17T18:14:00.000-06:002008-11-17T18:14:00.000-06:00There were sign of discontnent within Kroger durin...There were sign of discontnent within Kroger during the 1920's and 30s. Kroger was reluctant to venture into the new concept of self-service supermarkets and Michael Cullen would leave the company to start King Kullen on Long Island, which argueably claims to be the first modern supermarket and Alber's would leave to start Alber's supermarkets in Columbus,OH. Alber's is credit with the first use of the word supermarket.

King Kullen still survives a regional operator on Long Island. Alber's was acquired by Atlanta-based Colonial Stores and eventually converted to Big Star in the early 70s. By the mid-70s, the Ohio operation was in its death throes.

The modern Kroger does a poor job of catering to ethnic needs that Barney Kroger used to build the chain. Kroger's overall strategy seems to be target a wide swath of the demographics with a mid-market to moderately upmarket appeal, but it seems to work better than the strategy of its contemporaries in the face of Walmart.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1033289293807518844.post-121718398086813242008-11-12T22:20:00.000-06:002008-11-12T22:20:00.000-06:00Didi - Well, Barney was of German descent and a Ci...Didi - Well, Barney was of German descent and a Cincinnati native, so he would know!:)It sounds quaint (and maybe slightly politically incorrect)today, but really is a testament to America's rich ethnic heritage.
